Are Graham Crackers Healthy?

Ahh the question everyone wants to know the answer too. Are graham crackers healthy?! Well, the typical graham cracker you get at the store claims to be made with real honey. Yes, this may be true, but there is also processed sugar, synthetic oils, and ARTIFICIAL flavors on that ingredient label too.

If you know anything about the Shh Fam, you know that we’re all about real foods here! Just look at my Healthy Sugar Cookies, or my 5 Ingredient Mini Sweet Potato Pie recipes. Graham Cracker Recipe Without Butter

The amazing thing about these homemade graham crackers is that you can use grass-fed butter, refined coconut oil, or vegan butter! Making them without butter is a great option if you’re vegan or trying to avoid dairy. The butter flavor does play a major factor in making these graham crackers taste like the actual thing, so see my notes below about how to enhance the flavor if you’re using a dairy-free option.

How Long do Graham Crackers Last? How Should I Store Them?

Room temperature: You can store homemade graham crackers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Can you freeze homemade graham crackers? Yes! You can freeze both the dough and the baked graham crackers! They’ll last up to 4 months in the freezer. This is my prefered way to store them because they don’t get stale.

This base graham cracker recipe is just the beginning. You can spice these crackers up (literally) by making them cinnamon, gingerbread, pumpkin, or even chocolate flavored!

Homemade Graham Crackers

These Easy Homemade Graham Crackers are crunchy, lightly sweetened, and packed with whole grains! You only need 6 simple ingredients. This recipe is nut-free and can easily be made vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free!

Prep Time 10 minutes

Cook Time 15 minutes

Chill Time 30 minutes

Total Time 55 minutes

Ingredients

Instructions

1. In a medium bowl using a hand mixer or stand mixer, cream butter and honey together until smooth and pale.

2. To the butter, mix in salt, whole wheat flour, and baking soda.

3. Add in cold water and mix gently until a dough forms (add a little more water if dough is too dry).

4. Cover and set in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

5. After 30 minutes, remove dough from fridge, adjust the oven rack to the middle position and preheat to 350 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

6. On floured surface, shape dough into rectangle and roll out until 1/4 inch in thickness. If dough starts to crack, use a little water and pinch it back together. Work gently. Fold in half and transfer to baking sheet.

7. Pre-cut graham crackers into 15 pieces (I use a pizza cutter). Use a fork to gently poke holes into crackers. Opt: brush with almond milk or milk of choice to make golden.

8. Bake at 350 F. for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and slightly firm (they will firm up more when cooled).

9. Let cool completely before serving.

10. Store in an airtight container on the counter for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 4 months! (I prefer freezing them to keep them crunchy and fresh)

Notes

  1. To make these graham crackers vegan/dairy-free: Swap the grass-fed butter for vegan butter or refined coconut oil. If using coconut oil, I recommend adding in 1 tsp vanilla and/or 1 tsp cinnamon to boost the flavor.
  2. Baking time may vary depending on how thick you made your graham crackers and how your oven bakes things. The crackers do crisp up more when completely cooled.
  3. To make these graham crackers gluten-free: swap the whole wheat flour for 1:1 gluten-free flour. I have not tried this myself, but it should turn out great! Let me know if you do this!
  4. Make these graham crackers sweeter: Feel free to make these graham crackers as sweet as you would like them by adding more honey. If you do this, just adjust the flour and water amounts until you have a nice dough.
