EVE is something special in the world of videogaming. While there have been many space-focused games, and many massively multiplayer role playing games, EVE is by far and away the biggest, most complicated and longest-lasting space MMORPG in the history of the world. It's also perhaps the most epic and interesting player-created story ever to exist in gaming, with a dramatic history of conflict, betrayal and heroics that rivals just about any story out there, even famously massive and complex ones like Game of Thrones or Star Wars. But what makes EVE special is that every single thing that happens in the game is entirely caused by players themselves.
At its most basic, EVE Online is a game where players control a space ship and fly it around a massive persistent galaxy, getting in combat, trading, building things, exploring and interacting with other players. There are nearly 8000 systems in the game, each with its own stars, planets, moons and more, and with 300,000+ active accounts (fluctuating depending on the year), that's a ton of space to explore and a ton of people doing the exploring. Players can choose between four different races for their character on their EVE Online account, but since every character can learn every skill in EVE, this is more about picking what their character will look like than anything else. Once that's done, players will choose a “bloodline” (which does affect your character's options, though only slightly), a name and a portrait, and then they will be dropped straight into the massive decade-old universe that is EVE Online.
Getting Somewhere in EVE: It's Hard, and It Takes a Long Time
Once players are in the game, what they do in EVE is pretty much up to them. There are some mission sets for newbies to try out and learn the ropes with, gain some skills and get access to some ships and money (called ISK in the game), but there's no linear story for EVE, and nothing is ever forced or even needed to do. EVE is a truly open experience, with no classes or restrictions on what gamers can do or become, and because of that it is often considered heavily overwhelming for new players.
One can go in many different journeys in EVE Online. Whether it be to mine asteroids, build ships, trade goods across the stars, get in fighths, join a clan, or even start a corporation. All of this is available to the player; it just takes a lot of time in EVE.
In fact, unlike many other MMOs, EVE skills don't grow through traditional experience points, but instead take a specific amount of real-world time to get better. Gamers can have these skills train even as they are logged out of the game, but even with that option, it takes a very, very long time in EVE to get their account to a level that will allow them to participate in any of the awesome and huge space battles or other fun activities that have made EVE famous.
Considering that there are still articles written about what is happening at high levels in EVE today, over a decade after it began, these parts of the game like the wars and big corporate projects are what players really want to be doing. It's understandable then that players that don't have the time to play every single day and would consequently be too intimidated to get involved in this awesome game, since it's going to take them years to get their character skilled and rich enough to make much of a difference.

There is no videogame that has ever been as epic as EVE when it comes to online role-playing games, but getting an EVE account to the level where players can actually be involved in battles and take part in the amazing storylines that occur in this game is a task that has long been just too difficult for most players to hope to accomplish in the amount of time they have to game.
